At Yokono, we’ve been designing footwear for real life for years.
The kind that includes endless days, impromptu plans, and walks that last
longer than expected. We aim for that exact point where comfort doesn’t clash
with looking good. And if there’s one model that defines this balance, it’s the
wedge sandal.

Wedge sandals have magic. They give you height, elongate the legs, and if the engineering behind them is good, they offer stability that’s impossible to achieve with stiletto heels. But let’s be honest: not all wedges feel the same. Some pairs look amazing in the display, but torture your feet after just two hours of wear.

That’s why we created this guide. Because part of our brand is not just selling shoes, but helping you understand what makes a model you’ll wear every day different from one that will gather dust in your closet. The better you choose, the more you’ll enjoy them.

1. Height Catches
the Eye, but the Angle Decides Comfort

Almost everyone first looks at the height. It’s logical; we’re looking
for that flattering effect. However, the secret is not how high you go, but how
you rise. What matters is the slope.

A high wedge can be incredibly comfortable if the incline is gradual and the forefoot doesn’t get forced. On the other hand, a low wedge can destroy your feet if your body’s weight shifts abruptly forward.

Our design rule is strict: if the step doesn’t feel natural, the model is discarded. No debate.

2. Wide Base: The Secret to Stability

The great advantage of the wedge over the stiletto heel is support. But for this to work in practice, the base must be generous and solid.
Think about the surfaces you walk on in summer: cobblestone streets, uneven
sidewalks, or seaside promenades.

A consistent base makes walking safe, reducing tension on the ankles. If the sandal "dances" or feels unstable when you place your foot, you’ll tire much faster.

3. Weight

This is the most underestimated factor. You might try on a sandal in the store and feel fine standing in front of the mirror. But what happens after you’ve been walking for 40 minutes? If it’s too heavy, it will become a burden.

Summer footwear should feel light. It’s not about looking like paper, but about accompanying the movement without requiring extra effort from your legs. If you feel the sandal "pulling" you down to the ground, it’s not suitable for all-day wear.

4. Materials That Caress, Not Rub

Summer is a real test for the feet: heat, humidity, and friction.
There are no shortcuts here. Materials are everything.

We choose soft and flexible leathers. Why? Because the material should adapt to the shape of your foot, not the other way around. When choosing, pay attention to these details:

The straps should not be rigid or dig in. Check that the inner seams are smooth. The first contact with your skin should be pleasant.

If you feel any pressure point, no matter how small, don’t think it will "give." With the heat, that discomfort will multiply.

5. Support: The Foot Shouldn’t “Dance”

To walk safely, the foot needs to be supported, not trapped.
It’s a subtle but vital difference.

A good wedge prevents the foot from sliding forward (the famous “toes poking out”) or the heel from lifting while walking. When support is lacking, you
end up curling your toes to compensate, which causes fatigue. Look for straps
well-positioned over the instep, adjustable closures, or straps that evenly
distribute pressure.

6. The Insole is the Heart of the Shoe

You can have the most beautiful wedge in the world, but if the insole is hard, you’ll hate them. Cushioning is what separates a shoe for "a while" from one for "all day."

You need something that absorbs the impact while walking.
When trying them on, walk around a bit and evaluate: Do you feel the ground is
too hard? Does the arch of your foot rest well? The insole is that invisible component that determines whether you’ll choose that same model again next
summer.

7. Non-Slip and Flexible Sole

Walking isn’t posing. It’s moving across smooth floors, wet tiles, or hot asphalt. A sole with good grip saves you from unnecessary scares.

Also, watch for flexibility. Although the wedge is a block, the sole should allow some give with each step. If it’s completely rigid, you’ll walk like a robot. We seek smooth movement.

8. Your Lifestyle Matters More Than the Event

Sometimes we buy with a wedding in mind and forget
about the other 90 days of summer.
Our advice is to choose with your real routine in mind.

Do you walk a lot? Prioritize support and extra comfort in the insole.

City and asphalt? Look at the grip of the sole.

Traveling and packing? Look for lightness and versatility to match with everything.

The most worthwhile wedges are the ones that solve a regular Tuesday, not just a party Saturday.

9. The Ultimate Test

How do you know if you made the right choice? It’s simple: you forget you’re wearing them.

If after two hours you’re still walking at the same pace, and you’re not eager to get home to take them off, you’ve made the right choice. The true elegance of a wedge sandals is not in the Instagram photo, it’s in how it lets you live the moment.

If you’re looking for models designed with this philosophy — where height is balanced with foot health — take a look at our wedge sandal collection.

Footwear Should Be Enjoyed, Not Endured

Wedge sandals are the perfect ally when chosen wisely. Height, yes, but balanced.
Design, of course, but functional.

At Yokono, we believe that a shoe that
doesn’t accompany you is pointless. We want your feet to feel just as good at
the end of the day as they did at the beginning, because that’s the only sign
that matters to us.
