Every summer the same question comes up at Yokono: wedge or platform? They sound similar, both give height without the torture of a stiletto heel, and they're often confused. But they're not the same, and understanding the difference is what separates a shoe you take off by mid-afternoon from one you never want to let go of.
The wedge is a solid heel that fills the entire space between the heel and the front of the foot, without that gap a stiletto leaves. Its profile is usually triangular: higher at the heel and descending toward the toe.
The consequence? Your body weight isn't concentrated on a single point, but distributed over a continuous support surface. That's why a six-centimeter wedge walks infinitely better than a stiletto of the same height.
The platform plays a different game. Here the sole is also thick under the front of the foot, not just under the heel. In other words: it raises the toe as well as the heel. That detail, which seems minor, changes everything, because it reduces the real incline between heel and toes.
A wedge lifts by resting the whole foot on a continuous ramp; a platform lifts the whole thing, front sole included. That's why many of our models combine both: the wedge provides the height and the aesthetic, and the front platform compensates for the slope so the foot stays almost flat. The best of both worlds.
In practice, you notice it in your stride. The wedge places the foot on a gentle, enveloping slope; the platform raises you "as a block," with a straighter posture and, often, a more urban, bolder air.
It depends on three factors, and it's worth looking at them in this order.
Use. For many hours on your feet and uneven terrain, the wedge wins for stability and weight distribution. For a more current, laid-back look, with jeans and an urban air, the platform has that bold edge that stylizes effortlessly.
Material. Cork is king, and at Yokono we know it well: light, natural and with excellent cushioning that absorbs every step. Jute brings the Mediterranean touch of summer, though it tends to be more rigid, so always check the inner insole.
Support. The most comfortable wedge or platform in the world is useless if the foot slides around inside. Wide, crossed straps or an adjustable buckle make the difference between a shoe that holds up all day and one that ends up in your hand before lunch.
